CalSERVES Training Programs provide a range of training to youth workers and volunteers in the fields of after school national service, character education, service learning and volunteer development.
California After School Demonstration Program (CASDP)
CalSERVES has the opportunity to model high quality effective practices and provide technical support and training to after school sites throughout the state of California, with the goal of raising student achievement in programs statewide. Learn more.
Sonoma County Afterschool Network (SCAN)
SCAN is a network of Sonoma County After School providers and schools who have formed to promote and encourage the development of high quality after school programs in Sonoma County. The SCAN group meets monthly where members share information, network, and develop training opportunities to support the field. SCAN also provides a training series for After School Program Staff in Sonoma County. Learn more.
Napa County After School Partnership (NCASP)
CalSERVES, in partnership with the Napa County After School Partnership, provides a training series in 2009-2010 to support after school staff in programs throughout Napa County. Learn more.
Conferences
CalSERVES facilitates several conferences each year for the the After School Community. The Summer Institute, held every August, is a 3 day event to train, energize, and inform After School workers. The Region 1 Conference, held in November, is a 2 day training on all aspects of After School. Learn more about the 2009 Region 1 Conference - Thriving and Inspiring!
National Service Training Program
The National Service Training Program includes the core of AmeriCorps training to support the development of skills that AmeriCorps, VISTA, and NCCC members need to effectively serve in the community. The program focuses on building mentoring skills, fostering leadership ability, and nurturing a sense of civic responsibility in participants. The core of AmeriCorps trainings give all members an orientation to the basics of AmeriCorps, develop their diversity awareness, teach important leadership and civic engagement skills and help them plan for life after AmeriCorps as they reflect back on their year of service.
Character Education Training Program
Character education trainings provide development opportunities to youth through integrated character education programs. These trainings teach youth workers to understand their position as role models, teach character by integrating lessons into academic instruction, implement democratic classrooms, and utilize Tribes to support the development of teamwork and respect.
Service Learning Training Program
The Service Learning training program introduces youth workers to service learning. Experienced trainers share project examples, discuss service learning pedagogy, and support the development of projects that link service to the academic standards. Trainings focus on models for developing community partnerships, facilitating youth voice, implementing successful projects, and creating reflection activities with impact.
Volunteer Development Training Program
The Volunteer Development Training Program is designed to prepare participants to support volunteers and ensure high quality service experiences. The program includes training in recruiting high quality volunteers, developing volunteer roles, and retaining volunteers through on-going support and recognition.
