About
CalSERVES Reading Programs match caring adults with struggling elementary students to provide high-quality reading tutoring. Through its intensive, one-on-one program, CalSERVES supports the reading ability of students from kindergarten through eighth grade who have not yet mastered the reading skills appropriate to their grade level. In addition to fostering the academic growth of students, the program also nurtures strong mentoring relationships between tutors and tutees.
Under the direction of a supervising teacher, reading tutors work with each student four days a week, following a structured lesson plan designed to develop reading and writing skills and to encourage a life-long love of reading. Children are assessed regularly to inform and individualize instruction and gauge progress. Program staff work closely with school partners to ensure that the tutoring sessions complement and support the work children are doing in the classroom. Strong connections are built with parents through on-going written communication and invitations to Family Literacy Nights and other special events.
