CalSERVES After School Programs create after-school environments that foster success for children and families at eight schools in Santa Rosa. This free program provides after-school academic, enrichment, and recreational activities for struggling students identified by their schools. Through AmeriCorps, After School mentors receive a monthly living allowance and an education award. They also gain valuable skills and experience working with children and youth. CalSERVES After School Programs has been in existence since 1999, with program partners that include Sonoma County elementary schools, AmeriCorps/California Volunteers and the California and U.S. Departments of Education.

Comments about After School from teachers:

"This program allows students who need extra help have a safe place to receive more of the basics, get a snack, and enjoy safe playtime."

"I think it is wonderful that students are taking part in an after-school program, rather than sitting in front of a TV or hanging out on the streets."

"I like knowing my students have somewhere productive and safe to go after school—they truly love After School."

"This is an opportunity for students to complete and get help with homework, whereas if they were home they would find it difficult to do."
