About
CalSERVES After School Programs creates after school environments that foster success for children and families. The program provides after school academic, enrichment, and recreational activities that enhance the learning and develop the skills of struggling students. Free to families of students who are identified by their school for participation in the program, CalSERVES provides a safe and healthy place for children in grades 1-8, from the end of the school day until 6:00pm daily.
The After School day is designed to provide students with engaging, constructive activities that make learning fun and place an emphasis on service learning and character education. In classrooms led by teams of AmeriCorps mentors and overseen by a supervising teacher, children participate in reading groups and activity clubs, community building games, enrichment centers and physical education, as well as homework support. Children also have opportunities to make meaningful connections between after school and school day curriculum. Through all of their activities, important life skills such as conflict resolution, teamwork, and personal responsibility are developed and nurtured. The program also strives to build meaningful connections between families and their schools through on-going communication, family literacy nights and community service events.
